CALCIUM CARBIDE

Calcium carbide (CaC2), is a crystalline substance. Besides the calcium carbide, it contains in small amounts: aluminium carbide, aluminium nitride, calcium phosphide and sulphide, magnesium and aluminium oxides, magnesium-aluminium silicates, free carbon and ferro-silicon.

Molecular weight: 64,1 g/mol
CAS number: 75-20-7
EINECS number: 200-848-3

PROPERTIES
Fresh calcium carbide is of a violet-red colour that appears blue-violet on the fracture, is a strong hygroscopic substance and is decomposed already in the air, odour like garlic similar to acetylene. In the case of contact with water and damp surroundings, easily inflammable gaseous acetylene is released and explosive compounds with air are rapidly formed.

APPLICATION
Calcium carbide is designed for acetylene production (welding and cutting of metalls). In metallurgy it is used for raw iron desulphonation. Production of nitrogenous artificial fertilizers and preparation of cyanogenous compounds .

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AND HEALTH PROTECTION
Calcium carbide - taking concentration of calcium oxide (10-15%) in concideration, it has toxic effects on the eyes and respiratory tract. By means of aeration, exhaustion of the working place, concentration of dust in the air should be avoided or reduced. Avoid contact with skin and mucous membranes. Workers must use personal protective equipment: dust respirator, protective goggles, protective canvas gloves and protective clothes. Calcium carbide must not come into contact with water and air humidity, because it causes its decomposition accompanied by heat emission that may result in self-ignition of the formed acetylene, or explosion respectively.

PACKING, TRANSPORTATION AND STORAGE
Calcium carbide is packed into sheet-metal barrels of 100 kg and 50 kg net weight, metal containers of 1000 - 1800 kg net weight, or into the customer containers of agreed weight.

All the packaging coverings must be properly sealed so as to avoid atmospheric humidity.
Each storage unit must be tagged according to Act No. 163/2001, RID and ADR regulations. Transportation on rail and roads is performed based on valid regulations.

Product residues should be stored in closed containers. Disposal only in special facilities designed for acetylene production!

The presented instructions are to be considered as general and may be modified with regard to local conditions.
